Intro
This 15 days self drive jeep tour through the north east of Cambodia shows you a surprisingly different Cambodia. Discover, explore and enjoy.
Cambodia
Cambodia is a kingdom in Southeast Asia. It is 181,035 square kilometres (69,898 square miles) in area, bordered by Thailand to the northwest, Laos to the northeast, Vietnam to the east, and the Gulf of Thailand to the southwest. Cambodia has a population of over 15 million. The official religion is Theravada Buddhism, practiced by approximately 95 percent of the population. The country's minority groups include Vietnamese, Chinese, Chams, and 30 hill tribes. The capital and largest city is Phnom Penh, the political, economic, and cultural centre of Cambodia. The kingdom is a constitutional monarchy with Norodom Sihamoni, a monarch chosen by the Royal Throne Council, as head of state. The head of government is Hun Sen, who is currently the longest serving non-royal leader in South East Asia and has ruled Cambodia for over 30 years. Cambodia has become a popular destination and the country is developing fast. The city of Siem Reap was about thirteen years ago a small place with dirt roads and one traffic light, nowadays is the most touristic city of the country and the historical heart of Cambodia. The temples of Angkor is about seven kilometers of the city center and there are a lot of facilities to entertain the tourists from all over the world. But Cambodia is not only Angkor Wat. This fascinating, friendly country has so much more to offer. Countryside tours, floating villages, white sand beaches, tropical islands, jungle trekking, the mighty Mekong river, bicycle tours, cooking class, waterfalls, hilltribes, and much more.

Day 2
Siem Reap
Kulen National Park
Choose your jeep! This will be your home for the next 12 days!
About 60 kilometers away from Siem Reap rests the Phnom Koulen National Park. Phnom Koulen is one of the most scenic and historically significant locations in the area. Phnom Koulen is considered a sacred mountain in Cambodia, of special religious significance to Hindus and Buddhists who come to the mountain in pilgrimage.
Most of our guests consider the reclining Buddha as the highlight of this tour. Then there is an area of Hindu lingas on the riverbed; though nothing as extensive as Kbal Spean. Above one of the most spectacular 2 waterfalls in Cambodia, there are a number of temple sites with carved animal figures. At the base of the falls is a large pool where we can go for a refreshing swim. Later in the afternoon we will head back by taking the outback dirt paths. On the way you back you will visit the Landmine museum. The Cambodian Landmine Museum The Cambodian Landmine Museum and Relief Facility (Museum for short) was established in 1997 by ex-child soldier Aki Ra. After years of fighting he returned to the villages in which he planted thousands of mines and began removing them, by hand, and defusing them with homemade tools. This place will tell the story of landmines in Cambodia, how they have impacted the country’s past, present and will continue to impact its future. The story is told through the story of Aki Ra, the founder, who was suppressed into the Khmer Rouge Army as a child soldier, and spent his youth fighting in the wars that ravaged his country for nearly 35 years. In the late afternoon we will reach your accommodation in Siem Reap.

Day 3
Siem Reap to Ko Ker
Feel like Indiana Jones
After a good breakfast we leave the village and drive into the Cambodian ‘outback’ to the mysterious 12th century temple of Beng Melea, one of Cambodia’s true hidden gems. Heavily overrun by trees, vines and moss, Beng Melea gives you a truly evocative insight into the majesty of the ancient temples. After lunch you will drive Koh Ker. It is a stunning and unique pyramidal temple built in 931AD. Walking in you could almost feel you were approaching a Central American Mayan sight such as Chichen Itza. Koh Ker also has a unique political history having been set up as a ‘new’ capital away from the Angkor area by Jayavarman IV. However, its importance was short lived; after the King’s death power was returned to the Angkor area around 944 AD. A tiring climb up wooden steps to the top of the Pyramid will soon be forgotten when you take into account the breath-taking views afforded from the summit.

The temple is a great place for beautiful photos and it is situated atop a 525-metre or 1,722-feet high cliff in the Dângrêk Mountains in Cambodia’s Preah Vihear Province. In 1962, following a lengthy dispute between Thailand and Cambodia over ownership, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague ruled that the temple is within Cambodia. Affording a view across a vast plain, Preah Vihear Temple has the most spectacular setting of all the temples built during the six-centuries-long Khmer Empire. In the late afternoon we will check in our hotel.

Beyond Banlung
In the morning, you will travel to Kachon by jeep where a boat awaits for you. After sailing the Tonle San River for half an hour, you’ll arrive at Koah Peak. This small village is very traditional and has no electricity, running water or any other facilities we normally expect. With your guide, you can take a tour of the village and meet the friendly inhabitants. The guide will take you the remnants from the Red Khmer period. The villagers have had to work hard during the Red Khmer but have survived this period, which is quite a miracle. The village is also the home to a very different ritual with regard to death. By the graves of the dead, large wooden puppets are placed to aid the survivors in the afterlife. These graves are unique in Cambodia and are only allowed to be visited by high exception and under strict supervision. Pieces of art and other objects that were important to the deceased are also placed by the grave. After this eccentric visit, you will return to Koah Peak by boat and then to Ratanakiri. Along the way, you will stop in a Krueng minority village.

You will be able to learn about how the elephants live, what they eat and how they have integrated with the local people.. As the focus of the program is elephant care, riding the elephants is not permitted. However, you will have the chance to feed them some bananas or bamboo before you say your goodbyes to the magnificent beasts.
