Cambodia

Cambodia is a kingdom in Southeast Asia. It is 181,035 square kilometres (69,898 square miles) in area, bordered by Thailand to the northwest, Laos to the northeast, Vietnam to the east, and the Gulf of Thailand to the southwest. Cambodia has a population of over 15 million. The official religion is Theravada Buddhism, practiced by approximately 95 percent of the population. The country's minority groups include Vietnamese, Chinese, Chams, and 30 hill tribes. The capital and largest city is Phnom Penh, the political, economic, and cultural centre of Cambodia. The kingdom is a constitutional monarchy with Norodom Sihamoni, a monarch chosen by the Royal Throne Council, as head of state. The head of government is Hun Sen, who is currently the longest serving non-royal leader in South East Asia and has ruled Cambodia for over 30 years. Cambodia has become a popular destination and the country is developing fast. The city of Siem Reap was about thirteen years ago a small place with dirt roads and one traffic light, nowadays is the most touristic city of the country and the historical heart of Cambodia. The temples of Angkor is about seven kilometers of the city center and there are a lot of facilities to entertain the tourists from all over the world. But Cambodia is not only Angkor Wat. This fascinating, friendly country has so much more to offer. Countryside tours, floating villages, white sand beaches, tropical islands, jungle trekking, the mighty Mekong river, bicycle tours, cooking class, waterfalls, hilltribes, and much more.

Making your own jewellery - Workshop Ammo
Ammo was founded by British jeweller Madeline Green in 2013. Ammo’s beginnings came as a result of working alongside long-established social enterprise Saomao, who have been training local people in jewellery making for over a decade in Siem Reap. Using bullets as a base metal for jewellery has been practiced in Cambodia for over 20 years and now thankfully the bullets we use are not from war or bloodshed. We simply recycle blank cartridges that have been fired once in practice – so it’s a great way to turn something negative into a positive! It’s a unique and fun activity and you can join our team to make a special piece of your own to take home! In the afternoon we’ll pick you up to learn more about Cambodian food and they will teach you how to bring the taste of Cambodia back home. At a unique location a bit outside Siem Reap you will learn how to make three different meals and you will receive the recipes afterwards. They give you information about substitute products you can use if you want to try it home too. And after all this hard work it’s time to eat!

Siem Reap - Koh Ker temple - Be Treed
Today we’re leaving to an unspoiled part of Cambodia. Our first stop will be Koh Ker Temple. Here was the capital city from 928 to 944 AD, northeast of Angkor. The temple is very secluded and is often overlooked because of its location, so a real insider tip. You can walk around the temple or go inside and explore it. Make sure you wear some good shoes! After a refreshing coconut we’ll continue our way and you will see many agriculture and farming along the way. At one point we arrive at a rubber plantation and if we cross this plantation to reach our destination in the forest you will have some stunning views. We welcome you to BeTreed Adventures in Preah Vihear Province, Cambodia. Working closely with the local community, they have developed a unique destination for the off-the-beaten-path travellers, nature seekers and adventurers in a small part of wild Cambodia. BeTreed Adventures is working on the frontline to protect 6,400 hectares of Cambodian’s “savannah” land, or dry dipterocarp forest. Through visiting, you will support these conservation efforts, encouraging the will of the people to preserve and protect their forest as they realize that conservation can provide a tangible and immediate benefit to them. You will love the owners Sharyn, Ben and their daughters Amelie & Jarrah. You will sleep in a house on stilts. There are no windows but there’s hot water and a private bathroom.

Day 6

Tabas Village to Tabas Village

Exploring Nature (Be Treed)
After a delicious breakfast, today is all about getting to know the environment. Be Treed is the brainchild of Ben and Sharyn who have lived in Cambodia for many years. Now they, their two daughters and their dogs, have dedicated their life to protect the forest from illegal logging and poaching in order to keep this little corner of Cambodia safe, green and beautiful. Their philosophy is to work directly with community partners working at trying to change things at a micro level, with the hope that this change can eventually impact many. Staying in this area allows you to experience pure nature at its finest, away from the tourist crowns in other areas of Cambodia. The forest is home to endangered and threatened species of Cambodian wildlife: banteng (wild cow), pileated gibbons, silver langurs, barking deer, sambar deer and many species of birdlife. The area also provides excellent opportunity for hiking through the forest. Here you can also explore Angkorian era “cave-temples”, and the quarries where the ancients carved out their stone, as well as admire the beautiful and aged trees people are working so hard to protect. There is also the opportunity to join Ben on one of his regular protection patrols. If you are feeling particularly adventurous, you can try the pair of 300 metre ziplines traversing a valley, providing you will beautiful panoramic views of the surrounding forest. You will spend your final night in the trees alone with nature, feeling you have got to know a side of Cambodia that few tourists are lucky enough to experience.

Day 7

Tabas Village to Kampong Thom

Hidden Temples - Preah Khan
After breakfast you will travel south along the dirt roads leaving the forest behind you and into the plains. Your first stop is the magnificent ruined temple of Preh Khan of Kampong Svay. The secluded jungle temple is as spectacular as some of its more famous relatives, yet is a virtual unknown on the tourist trail. The temple walls seem rise up out of the undergrowth, while large trees almost engulf the temple in certain areas. Preh Khan’s secrecy allows you to explore the entirety of this impressive complex in solitude, wandering in and out with the feeling that’s time, nor people, have touched this temple in hundreds of years. A truly unique and magical feeling, one that is very hard to come by these days in Cambodia. We continue our way to Sambor Prei Kuk. These temples are listed on the Unesco world heritage list. On arrival, you get a bike from the locals, and visit the three main temples with your guide. The narrow paths through the forests will lead you to discover a temple around every corner, all completely overgrown with vegetation. If you are not comfortable with riding bikes, we can do the tour on foot or by car. After visiting the temples, we head to Kampong Thom and arrive late in the afternoon. After that we will take you through some beautiful countryside to Kampong Thom.
